Money Matters

A woman saw something, liked what she saw and without thinking about the consequences, she took it for herself." Sound familiar?

Just another day...

My wife and I are trying to save money so we can transition towards full-time ministry. We've made some significant headway and we're amazed at how the Lord has blessed us in recent years.

However, 2 months ago the transmission in my wife's truck (2002 GMC Envoy) completely failed. $2,600 later it was back on the road again. Last month the same truck overheated because of a cooling system failure. $900 later and it was back on the road again. In both cases we had the cash on hand to cover the repairs, but they ate into our savings. Not too happy about that.

The Savings Habit

When I was young my dad always taught me to put away part of my money and "Save for a rainy day." At the time I didn't exactly understand what he meant by "a rainy day", but I do now. You never know when the car is going to break down, the refrigerator quits or a hundred and one other little accidents will happen that you will need extra money for. If you have extra money put aside you can shop around for the best deal, pay cash for it and save a bundle in interest.

Christians, Gambling, and the Lottery

Playing the state lottery, and frequenting casinos, have become prominent pastimes for millions of Americans. More and more people are participating, in the hope of becoming millionaires. While there have been a few exceptions and isolated cases in American history, it is really only recently that gambling has come to be considered socially acceptable. Though times have arisen when gambling became more widespread, overall public sentiment has frowned upon the practice. Gambling generally has been illegal in our society, and the word “gamble” was a slang term of reproach.

Credit Cards: A Godsend - But Only If Used Properly!

There has been much debate recently over the subject of credit cards, and whether lending companies should be more selective as to whom they grant credit to. The dire state of thousands of Brits' bank accounts would likely support the theory that many people are too quick to borrow and spend money that they later find they can't afford to pay back.

Paying the Price

Unlike the animals, humans have a conscience. Although evolutionists have yet to explain the existence of the conscience, the fact remains that humans recognize certain behaviors and actions as wrong. So how do you get individuals to do something that they feel is wrong? The answer in a single word is money. Offer an enormous amount of money, and some people are willing to push the envelope or bend the rules.

The Tithe Belongs to the Lord

What comes to mind when you think of a robber or thief? We might visualize a bank robber, a house burglar, or even a shop-lifter. But could you imagine one of your fellow church members, or even yourself, as a robber? It may seem impossible, yet the scripture below clearly states that all those who do not pay their tithes have robbed God."Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, In what way have we robbed You? In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation.

Prosperity Preaching: Deceitful and Deadly

When I read about prosperity-preaching churches, my response is: "If I were not on the inside of Christianity, I wouldn’t want in." In other words, if this is the message of Jesus, no thank you.
