What really happens to a person's spirit when he dies--whether by sickness or suddenly?? WEll-meaning friends have suggested that because he died so suddenly, his spirit still lingers. What does the bible say about this?

This will answer your questions more clearly then I can but our souls do not linger on earth
Remember that after the Crucifixion, when Mary Magdalene found Jesus in the garden, he told her that he had not yet ascended to his Father in Heaven. This implies that Paradise, where he had been while he was dead, is not Heaven.
It gets even more interesting in 1 Peter chapter 3, where it says that while Jesus was dead, he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who had been disobedient while in mortality. So here we have mention of two intermediate "holding places:" Paradise for the righteous and the spirit prison (for lack of a better name) for the wicked.

This is not a story and not about me. I just want the whole world to know my God, Lord Jesus Christ is alive! HE was here, is now here and coming in this near future.
It all happened about a month ago from today's date. I suddenly felt very ill. I noticed it during a game of table tennis after a Sunday Church celebration. My head was dizzy and heavy and for my left eye I saw two to three images. My simple excused was the glasses I am wearing need to be changed. Went home.
Told my wife and daughter about the bad feelings I was having. They told me to take a good rest cause during the past one week I was having late nights. It was Monday when I woke up the next day. The feelings that I had was still hanging on but this time my inner- self was burning. Did not tell my family but insisted that I need more rest. Later in the night my heart beat was bumping faster than normal. I got off from my bed and started praying cause I knew that this is not something that I had gone through for many years.
I really praise God, my Lord Jesus for his protection over my health for these many years that I did not experience serious illness like this one.
After the prayer I found peace in me and my sleep was sound until the next day. When I woke up that was on Tuesday our Church used to have a morning devotion. Forced myself to go for the devotion. During the devotion my head was really heavy and my focus of my left eye gave me strange images. When it was over I went out with a friend to lunch. Did not show any signed of improvement and found out that I had no appetite to eat. After about an hour I told my friend that I need to go.
The moment I reached home before taking off my socks I had to lay down on my lazy chair. My breathing was very heavy and trying to catch my breath. My wife and daughter came near and saw that my face was very pale and my lips were swollen. And my feet and hands were so cold as if they had been frozen. So, immediately I requested them to pray for me. I also pray earnestly to my heavenly Father too. I felt better after those prayers.
During that moment I only could claim on My Lord's Word on Matthew 17:20b, "for assurely , I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain,' Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. I just leaned on to that for that evening.
I told my wife and daughter that if I cannot survived through the night, I asked them not to query GOD for why he had taken her husband and father. I told them it was the glory of God for me to had passed on that way.
Praise God for allowing me to had a sound sleep but woke up a few times for water cause my internal was still burning furiously. My lips by this time already started to crack. Survived through the night.
Wednesday came; a phone call from church asking me to go for vistation. In my intellect I wanted to reject but my spirit prompted me to say yes. Told my wife about the visitation and she rebuted the idea. Anyway, I went with my church members to visit this friend of our Vicar. My Vicar was there too.
On the way, to this friend place my vision was already playing tricks with me. The way I look at the road was all lopsided to the left my head was feeling better than the last two days.
Our new friend was telling us why he was not been employed for so many years. The reanson for this immediate visit was he was suicidal. He had two minor strokes before laid off for employment almost twenty years. While he descriding how his strokes came about. Telling about the symptoms and it seem that he was talking about me. Immediately I praise God and thank His Spirit of bringing me here.
So, when I reached home the whole illness fell on me again. As serious as before but this time I knew how to relate to my wife and daughter. I told them that I had a very mild stroke and also it was not my first time. Told tell not to worry cause I have a God who knows how to teach me to overcome it. Anyway, it was not my first time going through these thing with the Lord. Glory to God.
Asked them to lead me into prayers and lead me to my room. Had a short conversation with them and later fell asleep. In my sleep this time, there was a strange happening. Not long in my rest the Lord allowed me to see a vision. My spirit was raised out of my body and I saw myself laying down on my bed.
The most fearing part was I also saw another body of me laying inside a casket. I presumed that I was dead. I was wearing a white three piece suite with a red bow tie. On the top of my both legs were two wreaths one bigger than the other was there. I look at my present body and took a second look at my dead body in which it was very peaceful and even having a smile on his face.
I paused for a moment.......... and I saw a very bright light at the front of the casket and I asked" is it my times up"? There came a replied, " NO! I will raise you up". And at that immediate moment I knew I'm going to get well and also heal from whatever it was. Praise be to God! I knew that I'm not just going to get well but also being restored by my Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
As of today I thank God my Lord Jesus that I be alble to sit here and glorified His Holy and Righteous name. To tell you friends this is not my first time the Lord had healed me divinely and miraculously.
As the scripture has written, "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Amen
